9 Best Free Games You Can Play on Xbox

October 17, 2023 by No Comments

Xbox has a surprisingly good selection of free-to-play games, including indie and AAA games. Many of these titles are free because they rely on in-app purchases, which are essentially unavoidable for some of the mandatory staples. However, some games justify their value in other ways and don’t necessarily need to be paid for.

The larger title also has some free trials that limit gameplay access, so those can be ignored. Instead, this list focuses on the Xbox’s best lineup of free games, avoiding as much genre overlap as possible.

9. Disney Speedstorm

This new cart game features all your childhood Disney favorites. It also has superior controls and physics compared to some notable cash-grabs. Capabilities separate each character well enough, pick-ups are good and tracks play smoothly. The graphics are also pretty amazing in free-to-play games.

However, Disney Speedstorm recently left early access and still has serious losses. Online co-op and racer unlocks are painful and there is a serious lack of content. So, despite some nostalgia and powerful racing, the basic quality of life and limited inventory hinder this title for now.

8. Island saver

Island Saver Animals

This collect-a-thon adventure proudly displays the influence of Slime Rancher. It takes many of the same mechanics but with a few thematic twists. Island Saver is partly educational, both environmentally and economically. The latter is unexpected, and neither of these detracts from the fun.

It caters to young players and is largely overlooked, which is unfortunate. Island Saver has solid controls, a vibrant world that’s naturally fun, and a simple tone that will really please indie fans.

7. Omega Strikers

Free Omega Strikers Game Overtime

This lively alternative to Mario Strikers: Battle League offers short and sweet gameplay with slick anime art design. Omega Strikers has only been out for a year and has already had several regular updates that have fixed some troublesome bugs and added interesting content.

The heroes are a lot different than expected, so experimenting with new comps is really fun. Gameplay is more forgiving and casual than comparable games, and more accessible to newcomers to the genre.

6. Rocket League

Rocket League Midnight Order Cars

This classic sports twist on racing games has a great premise, solid physics and plenty of cartoonish fun. There are a good range of creative modes and customization options. It is a family-friendly game that supports cooperation.

Rocket League also isn’t pay-to-win, which is a relief among free-to-play games, and it’s not exclusive to Xbox. Hardcore fans can also enjoy the e-sports scene. But the most desirable cosmetics have a stiff paywall, struggling servers, and have lost their novelty over time.

5. Trackmania

Free Xbox Trackmania Racing Course

The recent installment of the series continues to reward the fan base by emphasizing the creativity of the players. While regular updates are good enough, the community itself has given Trackmania unexpected legs. Gameplay focuses on building and sharing new tracks.

Fortunately, building a track is very intuitive and flexible. Last week’s announcements about limiting campaign access and merging Standard with the club led to some division. But there is still a lot of content to explore with racing and construction. Although Trackmania has been a free-to-play game for years, the Xbox port is relatively new.

4. Fall guys

Free Xbox Game Fall Guys Halloween Skins

Mediatonic’s runaway hit has become the best free experience thanks to the addition of Creative Mode. Although there are quite a few technical and matchmaking hiccups, creating your own courses with simple tools is a lot of fun.

Fall Guys hides most of its cosmetics behind paywalls. But with the new Fame Pass there are fewer seasons and some really cool franchise collaborations. It’s one of Xbox’s few free-to-play party games, a nice break from competitive gameplay.

3. Call of Duty: Warzone

Call of Duty Warzone Parachute Landing

Unsurprisingly, Warzone earns its spot here for its battle royale combat and its solid visuals. It has limited gameplay content compared to its competitors, but it’s still a good example of the genre that fans of the series can enjoy.

There are a lot of interesting terrains, making rotation play a big role, and the RNG isn’t that punishing. Also, the volume of the lobbies is still entertaining to watch. While it lacks the visceral tension and pacing of the core series, it does have decent tactics and crisp gunplay.

2. Apex Legends

Apex Legends Doppelgangers Cosmetics

This hero shooter has some of the cleanest moves in the genre and all the stories are fascinating and compelling. These highlights are holdovers from Titanfall as a direct spin-off. You can’t pay to win, and there are many legends along with a wide variety of weapons.

Apex Legends has some of the most aggressive cosmetic pricing of any free-to-play game, and battle passes are rarely worth it. However, the introduction of the mixtape finally added some much-needed content, and without it Apex would rank very low. Now the roster selection, game modes and different maps provide enough content to make up for its weaknesses.

1. Fortnite

Fortnite Bogstick Cosmetic

It’s an absolute juggernaut that combines many of the elements that make other free Xbox games successful. Fortnite is equally casual and competitive, offering a variety of gameplay and adding frequent updates to retain interest.

These updates can often include major IP crossovers, from the biggest franchises like Star Wars to celebrity icon series skins. The world of Fortnite is playful, massive, and has some elaborate mythology.

The selection of free games on Xbox is a bit limited and can be somewhat dated. However, many changes have been made to these titles over the years and there are some new additions to consider. My Hero Ultra Rumble is fresh, but still getting the hang of it. Let us know what your favorite free-to-play title is on Xbox!
