A Counter-Strike skin sells for over $1 million

June 5, 2024 by No Comments

The most expensive skin ever sold openly Just over $1 million has changed hands in CounterStrike’s history. The final amount was not disclosed by the private buyer, but the transaction value was indicated to be ‘in excess of $1 million’. This is a Stattrack factory new AK-47 in Blue Gem (Pattern 661), a weapon skin that has been kept secret for over a decade. It was known to exist in the wild, but its owner was never revealed – but the value of the skin was always common knowledge.

In January 2024, a Blue Gem AK-47 – a skin of sorts – was ‘discovered’, with many users speculating that the CS weapon had been unboxed in a case. This unusual pull used to have the reputation of turning an average gamer into a millionaire overnight – but it’s believed to have remained firmly in the collector’s grip for years. In 2022, a slightly ‘more worn’ variant of this skin sold for $400,000 – but it wasn’t the most expensive Counter-Strike skin ever auctioned.

The news was broken on social media by Jake Lucky, who shared a fascinating montage of the weapon:

Last year, a user unboxed a $150,000 rare blue gem karambit — a type of sword — just weeks into playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Earlier, a wealthy Chinese collector snapped up an extremely rare AK-47 skin for $160,000.

Many have called CS skins ‘OG NFTs’, but ironically, the value of these over-the-top cosmetics has surpassed that of the most popular NFTs, and will probably continue to do so for some time.
