According to a New official blogAmazon Games has announced the opening of a development studio in Bucharest, Romania, marking its first expansion into Europe.

Previously, Amazon Games already had studios in Montreal, San Diego, Orange County and Seattle.

Christoph Hartmann, VP of Amazon Games, said the Bucharest studio was “a natural next step for us as we address our broader portfolio.” The new dev studio will support Amazon’s games portfolio “now and in the future.”

Christian Pana, best known for his work as Managing Director at Ubisoft Bucharest, will lead the Amazon Games Bucharest studio. Pana’s experience extends to titles such as Far Cry and The Division. Today, Amazon Games is “actively building on an exciting roadmap,” Pana said.

The new studio in Europe follows the Amazon Games layoffs reported in November 2023. New studios are always welcome as the industry faces steady layoffs. Just yesterday, Larion also announced the opening of a new studio in Warsaw.

Amazon Games’ new Bucharest studio will support titles such as the anticipated Tomb Raider project and Lord of the Rings MMO.

Last year, Hartmann said that “bringing players to the brand new Lord of the Rings has been a long-standing ambition of our team.” They said the team plans to “do justice to the expanding Middle-earth universe.”

Today’s blog also mentions “unannounced projects from our San Diego and Montreal studios.”
