Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been fully revealed and is coming to PlayStation, Xbox and PC later this year on November 15th. It’s a monumental title from Ubisoft that reinvents the Assassin’s Creed franchise even more than Mirage did when it was released. October 2023. In the latest movie trailer revealed recently, we get an epic introduction to two brand new characters from Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Nayo, a shinobi, and Yasuke, a samurai.

This dual-leader system smacks of the core mechanic in 2015’s Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, which was set in Victorian London and also featured a dual-leader system designed with a male-female divide.

Syndicate though with samurai and shinobi

On the surface, Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate couldn’t be more different. They differ in terms of their setting, their respective places in the overall timeline, and the narrative that unfolds throughout the lengthy playthrough.

But at the heart of both games is the same dynamic: a dual-leader system built around one male and one female character.

Yasuke and Nao have dramatically different backgrounds, but Assassin’s Creed Syndicate’s Jacob and Evie Fry are biological brother and sister — twins, in fact. However, from the trailer recently released by Ubisoft, we get a clear impression that these two duos will work very similarly – if not identically.

In Syndicate, Evie Fry is a shrewd, silent and stealthy character who relies heavily on tricks and weapons like throwing knives to get the job done. Jacob, on the other hand, is brash, heavy-set, and prefers open confrontation to the quiet dagger in the back. From what we’ve seen, Nao and Yasuke operate similarly, with the former using ‘ninja skills’ to fluidly fly around the map, while Yasuke uses heavy weapons, thick armor and full-frontal attacks to achieve his goal. Objectives.

At any point, players could switch between two characters, taking on missions as they saw fit, but it was widely assumed that they would have ‘character-locked’ missions that could only be undertaken by one or the other – this is how it worked. Jacob and Evie Fry.
