Balatro is getting its first major update

Balatro, one of the biggest gaming hits of 2024, is getting its first major update since its February release.

The new update, which you can read the full notes for below, includes changes to various antes, new joker types like rentals and perishables, joker buffs, and more.

If you want to test the new update before it’s fully released to everyone, you can do so on Steam. To access it, do the following:

  • Go to Balatro in your Steam library and select it “Properties”
  • go “Betas”
  • choose “Beta Participation”
  • choose “public_experimental”

According to developer LocalThunk, the full release of the Balatro update is expected to arrive in the next week or so.

Balatro Update 1.0.1 Full Notes

  • Updated version of Love2D – This fixed an issue on Windows and Steam Deck causing poor/low performance for some players
  • Added toggle for ‘Reduced Motion’, removes swirly background and gyrating card motion
  • Changed default fallback from Tarot Fool to Strength (when all tarots are on screen)
  • Changed gold stake random seeds – now ensures that the first legendary joker in that seed is the joker you won’t win in the gold stake (purely++ for hunting)
  • The prior scaling in the white stake has been changed:
    • Prev 3: 2800 -> 2000
    • Front 4: 6000 -> 5000
  • The prior scaling in the green stake has been changed:
    • Before 2: 1000 -> 900
    • Front 3: 3200 -> 2400
    • Front 4: 9000 -> 7000
  • Ante Scaling Changed in Purple Stake:
    • Before 2: 1200 -> 1000
    • Front 3: 3600 -> 3000
    • Front 4: 10000 -> 8000
    • Before 5: 25000 -> 22000
  • Orange stock changed
    • Abolished the increasing pack price
    • Added new ‘Perishable’ mechanic, Jokers have a 30% chance to have a ‘Perishable’ sticker, disabling them after 5 rounds
  • Changed the share of gold
    • Scrapped -1 hand size
    • Added a new ‘Rental’ mechanic, Jokers have a 30% chance to have a ‘Rental’ sticker (stacks with Eternal/Perishable) which costs $1 upfront and $3 per round
  • Buffoon has been made permanent to apply to jokers in packs
  • Changed the first shop in each run to always include a simple buffoon pack in the pack options
  • Upcoming blinds/tags can now be seen in the shop immediately after beating/cashing out the boss blind
  • Some blinds are now banned on challenge runs – Crimson Heart, Verdant Leaf and Amber Acorn are banned in ‘Jokerless’ – Verdant Leaf is banned in ‘Typecast’ – Verdant Leaf is banned in ‘Non-Perishable’ – The Plant is banned in ‘Mad World’
  • Buffed Sat
    • Now gives +3 mult instead of +2 mult for straights
  • Buffed Neptune
    • Now gives +4 mult instead of +3 mult for straight flush
  • Buffed Eris
    • Now gives +50 chips instead of +40 chips for a flush five
  • Buffed Ceres
    • Now gives +4 mult instead of +3 mult for flush house
  • Uncommon tag changed – now makes Uncommon joker free
  • has been changed rare Tag – Now makes a rare joker for free
  • Negative, polychrome, holo, foil tags all make their joker free
  • Changed the investment to $25 instead of $15
  • Altered 8 Ball – scrapped old effect, new effect -> 1 in 4 chance of spawning tarot when any played 8 scores
  • Changed Blue Seal – Now creates the planet card of the last poker hand played during the round
  • Changed both Mad and Wise Joker – scrapped ‘having 4 of a kind’ effect, now applies to any hand with ‘two pair’ instead
  • Changed Yorick – scrapped old effect, new effect -> X1 more gain for every 23 cards discarded (starts at X1)
  • Changed Magician Tarot – Lucky now applies to 2 cards instead of 1
  • Midas Mask Changed – Gold enhancement now only applies to scoring face cards, costing $7 $6
  • Changed the vampire
    • Now only removes improvement from scoring cards
    • Gives X0.1 mult for each improvement instead of X0.2 mult
    • Rare rather than uncommon
  • Changed madness – now only applies to small/big blinds, not on the boss blind option
  • Changed to-do list – Poker hand no longer changes at payout, always changes at end of round (no longer stuck in straight flush)
  • Shortcut description changed to include a more appropriate example (10 8 6 5 3)
  • Ancient Joker Changed – The chosen suit no longer repeats between rounds
  • Changed Swashbuckler – now adds the sell value of all other jokers to Mult, not just jokers on the left
  • Hanging Chad Changed – now retriggers the card played the first time 2 times instead of once
  • Changed Flower Pot – now has a base suit of debuffed cards when determining whether it triggers
  • Bootstraps have been changed to include the current multiple bonuses in the description
  • Changed all 4 Sinful Jokers (one per suit) – now each gives +3 mult per suit instead of +4 mult
  • Changed Banner – now gives +30 chips for remaining oblivion instead of +40 chips
  • Fibonacci changed – cost $8 instead of $7, because Fibonacci
  • Changed Steel Joker – now gives X0.2 mult per steel card in full deck instead of X0.25 mult.
  • Changed Odd Toad – now gives +31 chips to an odd ranked card instead of +30 chips
  • Altered Sixth Sense – now uncommon and $6, very rare
  • Changed Hiker – Now gives +5 chips for each scoring card played instead of +4 chips
