Black Ops 6 will be available on last-gen consoles

Information regarding Black Ops 6 has surfaced online—specifically, regarding the game’s pre-order status at GameStop. In an image shared online, it looks like GameStop is preparing to accept pre-orders for Black Ops 6 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles.

That means it will appear on a console that was considered useless when the PlayStation 5 was released nearly four years ago.

Insider Gaming has been able to confirm with multiple sources that the image is legit and that Black Ops 6 is coming to last-gen consoles. As for why the film won’t have an Xbox One version, it’s understood that the Series S|X version is a cross-generation version, meaning it will also work on the Xbox One.

Insider Gaming first learned that Cerberus (Black Ops 6) was being developed for last-gen consoles in February 2023, but could not confirm if it would be final. However, after speaking with several GameStop employees and game developers, we can now confirm that it’s true.

Last year’s Call of Duty title – Modern Warfare 3 – was released on last-gen consoles as well as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC platforms. It’s a common assumption that this will surely be the last Call of Duty title on older generation consoles, but with Call of Duty essentially using the same engine, it’s hard to see why they’d go away.

As for the game coming to the Nintendo Switch (Call of Duty has now been coming to Nintendo platforms for 10 years as part of an Activision / Microsoft deal), Insider Gaming understands that it will start with the Nintendo Switch 2. It is likely to be ready to launch next year.

The information will be confirmed when the Call of Duty showcase takes place on June 9.
