To be honest, I played Cyberpunk 2077 when it launched, and was nothing short of a terrible disappointment, given the action RPG’s complete inability to run smoothly for more than a minute. Even under that minute, I had to endure unloaded textures, not to mention the icing on top of the crash that ensued.

Despite all of this, I saw the potential that Cyberpunk 2077 was looking to tap into, and thanks to the arrival of the 2.0 update and the continued efforts of the developers, those aspirations have now become tangible for the game. At the time of writing, update 2.01 is also out, bringing performance and stability improvements while addressing bugs along the way.

It has been officially stated that Cyberpunk 2077 was not something CDPR planned to walk away from, ever. Sitting down for an interview, IP game director Gabe Amantangelo expressed how he’s always had faith in the title and that the developers have been thinking about the 2.0 update — the action RPG’s reviving moment — for a long time.

Part of my conversation at the beginning with my boss and the board was: I believe in the team, I believe in this IP, but I want to do it right. And I will need the support to do it. And they’re like, yeah, you’ve got the support. The infrastructure we laid in 1.5, 1.6 all reached its peak in the program in 2.0.”

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty was released for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC on September 25, 2023. The base game is slated for a December 2020 launch for a variety of different platforms.
