Ghostbusters Tarot Deck and Guidebook Review

I didn’t know it at the time, but I married a witch. No mean feat, not even the one with the black hat and broom, although it’s okay to bring them out from time to time. With being a witch comes the duty to buy witch related items. And oh boy, our house is covered in all sorts of witchy things. Gothic art on walls, casket stretching board for cat. She’ll buy candles to burn, helping to banish what she calls “scary vibes.” It’s not really my thing, but happy wife, happy life. This includes purchasing items such as tarot decks. My wife has several of them. Some are even the theme of a show or movie she enjoys. On occasion she would bring them out, for example, at a party, read one or two, and put them away.

Honestly, I didn’t think she could use a tarot deck. I once saw a James Bond movie where tarot deck reading was a major plot point. That woman could see the future, because she was a virgin. You laugh, but that’s how the story goes. James Bond does what James does with women, and later in the film when she needs another reading, and fails because she’s lost her virginity. I always joke with my wife that she can’t be a very good tarot reader, after all we’ve been married for 12 years and James Bond. I see, she goes back to her deck of cards.

I know nothing about tarot cards and even less about reading the future from these cards. Tarot cards were originally created as playing cards only. I had no idea. I’ve never heard of tarochini, but it’s what you can play with a tarot deck. Cards are also used in cartomancy. Now is that another word you had to look up? me also. I had to go back and make sure I spelled that right too. It’s a fancy word for fortune telling or divination.

Writing is like magic sometimes. For example, how do tarot decks work? I have no idea. But I went and read about them, and now I’m back to share, no need to wait. See, like the tarot deck, it’s magic. The 78 cards are divided into categories, Major Arcana and Minor Arcana. The first 21 cards make up the Major Arcana. They represent important lessons and larger themes that surround your life story. The remaining 56 cards are minor arcana. They are meant to represent trivial, short-term, and more relevant events that you encounter on a daily basis. These are also divided into four suits, just like you would find in a traditional deck of playing cards. In traditional tarot those four suits are Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles. In the Ghostbusters Tarot they have renamed them Wands, Traps, Streams and Marshmallows. Very suitable.

This is the bulk of this deck, a rhythmed and retold tarot, designed to give you the same results you would see in a normal deck of tarot cards. The rest of the set has a nice storage box, where you’ll find a cell phone fits, and a small card deck-sized book. The books include art on all the cards and instructions. Instructions include how to use the deck, care for the deck, and how to bring back the souls of loved ones from the Great Beyond. Full transparency, he might not be the last.

I don’t believe in ghosts, or an afterlife, or much of this world. I don’t feel like I need to enjoy this tarot deck. The art style alone is amazing. Most of the characters are represented as green ghosts. They often perform a famous scene from the first two Ghostbusters movies, not something from the more modern movies. Every character you can think of from the first two films is here in one form or another. All major characters are also major arcana card heads. For example, Pete Venkman is The Fool, Louis Tully, Rick Moranis as I. The Magician. As you work your way through the deck you can see the thought and consideration that goes into choosing what to represent on the tarot deck. Representation also comes in the form of objects and ghosts. This deck has Slimer, along with some Ghostbusters tools. Ecto-1, proton pack, you name it and you see it. The style is also very good. The art looks flawless for what they are trying to show. I can’t get over how good it sounds. Ghostbusters and tarot decks, who knew it was a perfect fit.

After playing with the deck and reading through the guidebook I have become well versed in tarot lore. I now call myself a tarot man, able to see the future before it happens. I have become Tarot, destroyer of worlds. No, not even close. But beware, my tarot says that salad is older than it looks.
