Helldivers 2 now requires a PSN account to play on PC

According to a new Official update On Steam, the Helldivers 2 team announced that PC players will need to link their Steam account to a PlayStation Network account.

Starting May 6, 2024, new Helldivers 2 users on Steam will need to connect those accounts. Existing players on Steam must log in on May 30 and have until June 4 to connect a PlayStation Network account.

The new Steam post mentions the need to “protect our players and uphold the values of safety and security.” It is intended to prevent “grief and abuse” by prohibiting the initiation of injunctions, as well as appeals.

Helldivers 2 was first launched last February and has been a massive hit. The devs also had to increase its server capacity early on.

Now, there is some backlash among PC players over Helldivers 2’s mandatory PSN account. Unfortunately, many current players are unaware that the game was intended to introduce this rule early on.

Today’s Steam post notes that the only reason connecting a Steam account to the PlayStation Network was optional until now was due to technical issues at launch. Devs note that a PlayStation Network account is free.

Today’s account link announcement comes shortly after the devs poked fun at the recent Escape From Tarkov drama. They also recently announced a new Polar Patriots Warbond update. Polar Patriots is coming next week on May 9th and it will introduce new weapons, armor and more.
