In order to release all Xbox console generations

October 9, 2023 by No Comments

At the time of this article, the Xbox brand has been in the game console market for almost 22 years. The launch of Xbox resembles a Cinderella story when you put on your nostalgia goggles. What do you get when Sony turns down Bill Gates for Microsoft to develop software for the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo refuses to buy Microsoft? The answer is Xbox, of course. In this list we look back at all the Xbox console generations in the order they were released.

1. Xbox

It would be a true understatement to say that Xbox has manifested fear into the annals of gaming history. With the advent of the Xbox, Microsoft carefully used Sun Tzu’s adage: “Keep your friends close; Keep your enemies close. Of all Xbox consoles, the debut of the first console is both ironic and poetic. The irony is that Nintendo ditched the collaboration with Sony that led to the creation of the PlayStation. When the PlayStation became a household name, Microsoft offered to produce games for the PS2. Sony declined and Microsoft’s Xbox was born in 2001.

Not to forget the black brick of the game console with the iconic green branding. The controller is reminiscent of the Sega Dreamcast and is affectionately known as the “Duke”. Xbox launched with its flagship franchise, Halo: Combat Evolved. PlayStation 2 may have won the console battle of the sixth generation. However, Xbox planted the seeds in the online gaming space. Xbox Live, a paid online gaming subscription, has better servers and social options for gamers than the PS2 offers. Microsoft is a year late in this console race. You can’t deny that it’s one of the best Xbox consoles ever launched.

2. Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 was launched in 2005 and has an impressive 11-year lifespan. Of all the Xbox consoles, the Xbox 360 is arguably the most influential. Admittedly, the Xbox 360 had a rocky start. The earliest consoles produced reported high failure rates. This is where the infamous “Red Ring of Death” reared its ugly head. This Xbox console does not have wireless network connectivity and requires a separate network adapter at cost. An HD DVD accessory was sold for the console, but with Blu-ray becoming the industry standard, the Xbox 360 got the short end of the stick.

The Xbox 360 launched with over a dozen games. These games include Call of Duty 2, Dead or Alive 4, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Gears of War, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and Saints Row. By 2007, Halo 3 would make a really huge profit for Microsoft. These games are expanded through the regularly updated Xbox Live service. Gamers are more connected than ever.

This Xbox console has fortunately undergone revisions to the hardware. The Xbox 360 Slim variant has built-in Wi-Fi and better lifespan. Kinect made its debut and the peripheral was Microsoft’s attempt to dive into motion-sensing gaming. Unlike the Wii, the Kinect has full-body motion tracking. There are some good games for Kinect. Namely, Dance Central , Just Dance and the infamous Kinect Star Wars games. The next iteration of the Kinect will be the successor to the Xbox 360. However, the Xbox 360 is to thank for all upcoming Xbox console generations. It was one of the top Xbox consoles of all time and made Microsoft a serious contender in the console gaming arena.

3. Xbox One

The Xbox One was launched in 2013 and became the third Xbox console generation. Every home console manufacturer has a black sheep in the family at some point. For Nintendo, it was the Wii U. For Sony, the PlayStation 3 didn’t have many introductions at its reveal. This Xbox console, however, is the black sheep of the Xbox family. It’s a really good console. The intent of the Xbox One was miscommunicated to the user from the start. Its initial reveal focused more on anything but gaming. The Xbox console touts its value as an “all-in-one entertainment system.”

Rumors swirled that the Xbox One would be an “always-on” console. Meaning, the Xbox One must always be connected to the internet for updates, game licensing verification, and making playing used games virtually impossible. Microsoft reversed course following this setback. However, we’ll never forget the applause when Sony revealed their next console’s PS4 price, game sharing and online optional features.

It took some time for these unpleasant memories to fade into the rearview mirror. It might not be the top Xbox console that comes to mind but the Xbox One has finally found its footing. Some of the exclusives on this platform include: Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive, Forza Motorsport 7, Forza Horizons 5, Psychonauts 2 and Sea of Thieves.

4. Xbox Series X|S

The Xbox Series X & S consoles launched in 2020 and is Microsoft’s fourth generation of the Xbox brand. In particular, the Xbox Series X is praised for its technical features, low load times, and backwards compatibility. This generation of Xbox is a strong contender for one of the top Xbox consoles of all time. Currently, what the Xbox series of consoles lacks is a variety of dedicated software. Halo Infinite, Forza Horizons 5, Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, Microsoft Flight Simulator and Skarn are some of the exclusives on the platform. The Xbox series of consoles can satisfy its player base through such offerings.

Microsoft is doubling down on exclusivity for its Xbox brand, especially this generation. Bethesda is under the Microsoft umbrella and we’re seeing the fruits of that acquisition with Starfield. Sequels to Fallout and The Elder Scrolls series would follow. At the time of this writing, Microsoft is close to acquiring Activision Blizzard. Some of the notable IPs acquired include the multi-million dollar franchises Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon and Diablo. Don’t worry, Phil Spencer confirmed that PlayStation will continue to get Call of Duty games after the purchase is completed.

Finally, the Xbox series of consoles is still young. There are many opportunities in the coming years. The best Xbox console could already be in our hands and we don’t even know it. Time will tell and the return on our investment may be profitable.
