More layoffs hit Ubisoft as the company tries to deliver a roadmap

Ubisoft has announced that 33 employees in Toronto have been hit by the latest layoffs, which saw them lose their jobs. It comes as Ubisoft remains committed to delivering on ‘its ambitious roadmap’, a statement said. That’s the same argument we’ve been hearing over and over again over the last eighteen months, as nearly 20,000 industrial workers worldwide have lost their jobs. It almost always comes down to restructuring or re-alignment with a roadmap – and more often than not, it’s an ‘ambitious’ roadmap.

Back in January, we posted an exposé on the state of the game at Ubisoft, talking about the internal tensions experienced by teams everywhere. In November 2023, more than 100 employees were cut from the business, and before that, around 60 employees were affected by layoffs at a series of offices in the United Kingdom and North America. In February, Ubisoft workers in France went on strike to negotiate better wages.

This latest wave hits Ubisoft Toronat, the studio that was recently brought in to work on the Sands of Time remake. In a statement Published by PC GamerIt is said:

Ubisoft Toronto has decided to undertake a targeted restructuring to ensure it can deliver on its ambitious roadmap. Unfortunately, this affects the roles of 33 team members who are leaving Ubisoft. We are committed to providing them with comprehensive support, including severance and professional assistance, to help them through this transition.

It’s been a very unfortunate year and some for the gaming industry, with studios closing their doors after decades of business, projects being canned after years of work, and thousands of employees being turfed out without much warning. Ubisoft Toronto is the latest in a long line of studios to fall victim to this trend.
