In September, leaked court documents revealed that Microsoft was looking to buy Nintendo. Now, a month later, Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser is officially commenting on those leaks.

Nintendo was called a “major asset” for Microsoft until the acquisitions by Xbox head Phil Spencer. However, he acknowledged that any such deal is unlikely to happen, even with Microsoft’s backing, unless there is a push from shareholders.

Without that catalyst, I don’t see an angle to a mutually agreeable merger of Nintendo and MS, and I don’t think hostile action is a good move, so we’re playing the long game. Spencer said.

Bowser was asked about those specific comments in an interview Inverse.

“We have a great relationship with Microsoft.” He \ he said. “We consider them partners in many, many ways, and you only have to look at the Nintendo Switch to see that partnership. Obviously, Minecraft On Nintendo Switch and we bring Banjo Kazooie to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. So, we look forward to that partnership continuing.

Bowser continued: “As far as consolidation in the industry is concerned, I have been part of this industry for 16-plus years now. One thing that has remained constant is the acquisition of studios. But the other constant fact is that new studios are springing up every year. Amazing creative studios making content ranging from indie-sized to AAA-sized games. So when consolidation happens, on an equal footing, we’re seeing these new studios, which really speaks to the dynamic nature of the industry as a whole. Ultimately, it’s good for the player.
