Sea of Thieves PS5 FAQ

If I’ve played Sea of Thieves before, will my progress/items carry over?

Fear not, praise collectors! When linking your PlayStation and Microsoft accounts, any active pirate character will be playable in the PS5 version of Sea of Thieves. This means that any progress made with that pirate, including accolades, cosmetics, Twitch drops, and collected gold, doubleloons, and ancient coins, will be synced across all other platforms linked to that account.

Although there is a limited selection of designated platform exclusives, all additional cosmetics that players have previously purchased or have purchased while playing the PlayStation 5 version of Sea of Thieves will be available. This selection is subject to change as cosmetics become available through alternative channels and we will keep you all informed as it progresses.

Only cosmetics and items obtained through platform-specific offers may not be fully available on different devices. For example, the Duke Ship cosmetics linked to the launch of the Xbox Series X|S will not be used on the PS5. Likewise, the Ruby Viper cosmetics or Dauntless Adventurer closed beta rewards, other than PlayStation pre-order campaigns, are not available on Xbox or Steam.

Will there be special cosmetics to celebrate the launch of Sea of Thieves on PS5?

Pirates who pre-order on PlayStation 5 will get exclusive access to four Ruby Viper weapons and the Scarlet Storm Parakeet.

Additionally, participants in the PS5 Closed Beta will also receive Dauntless Adventure Sails and the title as unlockable rewards. These cosmetics are classified as non-transferable and are exclusive to players on the PlayStation platform.

We are currently making plans for an exclusive sail that will be available to all players during the PlayStation 5 launch period. This sail marks the convergence of pirates across all platforms – stay tuned for more details!

How do friend invites work?

An updated in-game friends list on PlayStation 5 now displays players’ current Xbox friends list alongside their PSN friends list, allowing them to easily invite friends from both platforms to join cross-play sessions. PlayStation users also have the option to invite friends to their session or use the platform’s friends list to easily join their friends’ sessions.

Do I need Xbox Live or PlayStation®Plus to play Sea of Thieves on PS5?

PlayStation players will need a PS Plus subscription to participate in multiplayer gameplay, but you can sail solo in Safe Seas mode even without an active subscription. PlayStation players do not need to purchase an Xbox Game Pass subscription when playing on PS5.

Solo play in Safe Seas does not require a direct subscription, it is not an offline mode as it is still connected to servers hosted in the cloud. Safe Seas can usually be played with a crew, but playing without a live membership only enables solo play – thus it’s not possible to join other players’ sessions or invite them to your own while playing the game.

Safe Seas mode still allows access to most of the game’s content, including all of the story-driven Tall Tales. Notable exceptions are PvP-focused elements such as The Reaper’s Bones and Faction Wars, as well as Athena’s Fortune Trading Company and world events such as Fort of the Damned and Fort of Fortune.

Will there be PlayStation-only servers?

Pirates playing on a PlayStation can disable cross-play functionality, thereby limiting their gaming sessions to exclusively include other PlayStation users. Players will also have the option to restrict gameplay to fellow controller users, allowing play between PlayStation and Xbox players who prefer controller-based gameplay.

If someone buys a digital version of a game that allows them to play on both Xbox and PC, will that also allow them to play on PlayStation 5?

To begin the adventures in Sea of Thieves on PlayStation 5, players will need to acquire one of the available editions of the game (Standard, Deluxe, or Premium) from the PlayStation Store. Xbox Play Anywhere is only available through the Xbox and Windows Store.
