Remedy cancels Project Kestrel to focus on other games

Remedy Entertainment has just confirmed the cancellation of ‘Project Kestrel’, a move the company has taken to focus on other games in its portfolio. While very little is known about Kestrel, we understand that the game began life as a free-to-play multiplayer game that pivoted to become a premium offering — but that hasn’t left the conceptual stages. In November 2023, Remedy assessed its position with Kestrel – then known as Vanguard – and made a major revision to the project.

Now, in a recent press release, the company has confirmed that the plans have been scrapped altogether.

Kestrel does not take flight

Kestrel, a project co-funded by Tencent, will not see the light of day. With that said, Remedy has confirmed that developers working on the game will be reassigned and there will be no layoffs – but the company’s ‘overall recruitment requirements’ will be reduced to account for the change.

in A long statementRemedy’s CEO, Tero Virtala, said:

Codenamed Kestrel showed early promise, but the project was still in the early concept stage. Our other projects are well advanced and moving into the next stages of development and we will benefit from increased focus on them. We can reassign talented Kestrel developers to these other game projects, and many of our support functions will receive additional focus on their activities.

It’s another way to make sure our game projects are progressing well. I would like to thank our Kestrel development team. Although we decided to stop the project for broader preventive purposes, our team did a good job and gave us valuable learnings. I would like to thank Tencent for their partnership so far. They were very professional and supportive.

A few days ago, Remedy provided an update on several games that the company has been developing. Updates have been handed out on the Max Payne remakes, Control 2 and codenamed Condor, a mysterious title set in the Control universe (which also includes a bit of Alan Wake).
