In a recent report published by Newzoo, which outlined the state of play for the gaming industry, the company looked back in broad strokes to 2023 and then the future and what’s coming next. One standout slide talked about the top ten games from each core platform in terms of MAU (Monthly Average Users) by 2023, which itself revealed some interesting tidbits.

These data showed that the starfield Only A single-player game will appear in the top ten games by average MAU in 2023 across PlayStation, Xbox and PC. It is also the only ‘new franchise’ to occupy one of the top spots. Every other game that appears on these top ten lists is a multiplayer or cooperative game – and surprisingly, the average age of these games is over seven years old.

Stellar results

in Newzoo report, it’s clear that live service titles continue to dominate the rest of the industry. Of every major platform, Fortnite has the highest MAU by 2023, closely followed by the likes of Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, and Roblox. There are also special mentions for Counter-Strike, League of Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, Apex Legends and Rocket League.

Starfield is an excellent example of these lists, which draw data from thirty-seven markets around the world. The only single-player-exclusive game to break into the top ten on a global scale, thanks to the game’s launch as part of Xbox Game Pass in September 2023. It ranked eighth overall, sitting in the middle of the Rocket League. and Apex Legends.

Ultimately, Starfield’s marketing campaign and hype train initially won over millions of players, but the drive behind the title seems to have fallen flat since its release in late 2023. There aren’t any signs of major expansions coming anytime soon, but we’re expected to see something revealed at the Xbox Summer Showcase, which will also give us our first look at Gears 6.
