The Super Mario franchise is one Long running Video game series of all time. The series includes classic games like Super Mario 64, Super Mario Bros. 3 and many more amazing games. Unfortunately, with 40 years of history under its belt, there are some stinkers. But what are the worst Super Mario games ever released?

For this list, we’re looking at the main Mario games. Mario Golf, Mario Kart, Mario Party and other spin-off games are not included. Those rankings will come in future lists, which we’ll add here when they’re released.

What are the 5 worst Super Mario games?

Super Mario Land – Game Boy

Yes, it was the first Super Mario game we could play on the go, but it didn’t make it a great game. More or less, we settled because it was what we had. Super Mario Land played well for its time, but the game felt a bit empty and left a lot to be desired. Fortunately, a few years later we got a fantastic sequel in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.

New Super Mario Bros. – DS

For a game with “New” in the title, there’s really nothing new about New Super Mario Bros. Nothing was added to the game, which made the game feel different from past 2D side-scrolling installments. It was an unforgettable experience overall.

Super Mario Bros. 2 The Last Levels – SNES

Worst Super Mario games ever

Sure, the game is more difficult than the first, but that’s not why it’s here. It’s on this list because it’s very similar to the first game. There are a few new power ups — like a poison mushroom that kills you — but nothing really offered aside from a difficulty spike that feels different from the 1985 original.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 – 3DS

Worst Super Mario games ever

If you were disappointed by the first New Super Mario Bros., the second installment will leave you completely speechless. They tried a new coin-collecting mechanic, but that was to add a feature that wasn’t really a feature. The game is short and run-of-the-mill, it leaves you wanting more… but not in a good way.

Super Mario Sunshine – Gamecube

Now, I’m not sure Super Mario Sunshine is one bad the game It’s not that bad, but it feels…there. The game doesn’t really do anything to advance the 3D games in the franchise in any way. It offered some disappointing platforming and I think the story and mechanics used just fell flat.
