Wizards of the Coast continues their onslaught of page-by-page changes to every character class in the near future Dungeons and Dragons 2024 Player’s Handbook. Now it’s Ranger’s turn. A cute and underrated class that never sat well with D&D 5th Edition players.

The Ranger class, based largely on the Lord of the Rings character Aragorn (aka Strider, aka Elfstone, aka Eagle of the Star, aka Hope), never seemed to pull its weight. This is why Rangers now have more magic and more martial ability. According to designer Jeremy Crawford, “The Ranger, more than any other class in the new Player’s Handbook, is a new class.” Which is good for such a widely played genre, but one that ranked low in player satisfaction surveys.

Spell casting appears at 1st level instead of waiting until 2nd level. They can now use a Druidic Focus, previously only optional from the Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything sourcebook. And they can cast more spells in addition to changing once per day. All spellcasters in 2024 D&D are getting this increased flexibility to easily change spells.

Also new: Mark of the Hunter is always ready, and you can cast it twice per long rest without using a spell slot. It’s going to make your extra 1d6 damage bounce off the battlefield wonderfully—or make it so you can track the creature if your Dungeon Master feels like strapping you in to chase it off the battlefield. does.
