Now that we officially have the upcoming title Assassin’s Creed Shadows, formerly Assassin’s Creed Red, let’s dive into the main protagonist. Yasuke, formerly a slave and now famous samurai, takes center stage in the upcoming open-world adventure. But his story could use some time in the spotlight, so let’s learn more about this unique character in the game world!

Who is Yasuke in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

Yasuke, a real-life samurai, underwent a significant rewrite for the story of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. In the game, he takes on the role of a slave traveling across the ocean in a slave ship when an unknown force suddenly attacks. In the heat of battle, everyone is killed in battle, including the man’s lover. All but Yasuke were rescued and transported to Japan. There, he learns how to become a samurai under the famous Nobunaga.

In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Yasuke inevitably allies himself with Nao in an attempt to oversee the unification of Japan.

Will Assassin’s Creed Shadows have multiple protagonists?

Yes! You play as Yasuke, a samurai, and Nao, a shinobi. Yasuke is likely to be more of a frontline fighter—a focus on combat. Alternatively, Nao allows for more stealth-oriented gameplay like in past Assassin’s Creed titles. A shinobi—a ninja—squirms in her shadows and attacks from above.

While not actually the first female protagonist in the franchise—see Cassandra in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey or Evor in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla—it’s the first time a female protagonist offers a completely different playstyle to a male counterpart. It’s also not a single character, like in past games, just a female version of a male. Nao is a unique character along with Yasuke!
